I’m Mónica and welcome to On the Road Mija!
Why Mija? Growing up in Puerto Rico I heard the term “mija” on every occasion. From my abuelita, to my mom, my tías and tíos, to later on using the term with my friends and the people closest to me. I’ve heard this expression come from so many amazing women, not only in my family (who BTW has so many strong female role models!) but, also from my friends Mexican abuelas, Colombian mothers, Salvadorian friends and many more…
In all of these instances, the term “mija” has been a way to embrace me and others into their family. It doesn’t matter where in the world I am, being called mija always makes me feel closest to my family and the place I call home.
The idea for On the Road Mija came to me because I noticed a lack of representation within travel bloggers. I am so proud of my Hispanic heritage! &, it’s sometimes disheartening to not be able to find people like me on this niche that I feel so passionate about. So, I decided that if I couldn’t find what I was looking for, I better create it!
On the Road Mija is a space where young Latinas can get creative, be inspired to travel and guide their adventures on the road. This will be a blog dedicated to showcasing traveling Latinas and honorary guests through their adventures around the globe.
I am originally from a little town called Caguas, in the island of Puerto Rico. As a child I grew up going to the beach on the weekends, playing under the mango tree in my backyard and enjoying the blessing that is to be from the Caribbean. As I grew up I wanted to explore more of the world. When I was 18 I traveled by myself for the first time. Spain called, and, oh boy did I answer! After that trip, my life changed. My perspective on everything shifted and I knew I caught the travel bug and there was no going back!
Currently, my travel bucket list keeps growing almost every day. There are so many places I want to explore that I sometimes feel a whole lifetime isn’t enough. But I will sure try to explore most of them! Apart from traveling I enjoy reading, singing in my car, concerts, long road trips with friends, farmers markets, food and, all things Spanish!
